Default Too Much Info?

Hey,

I fish Badin about once every 2 weeks, and haven't caught anything over 9 pounds. I am relatively new to fishing and am not sure what is considered asking for too much info. So, if I'm off base here let me know, b/c I def don't wanna step on anybody's toes or break any unspoken rules of the trade here.

- This time of the year on Badin, around what depths are you guys fishing? Does it change during the day or night?

- What type of bait are you using? Whole or cutbait? I could be the worst castnet thrower in the world, so for me to catch shad in the net is next to impossible. I usually get out to the lake about an hour b4 I'm ready so I can catch bream to use for bait.

Also, I would love to go with any of you guys when you go out on the water. Whether it be for a half day in the am or pm would be fine. I work at the golf course on the lake, so I can make myself available pretty easily.

One extra side question......I am thinking about getting in the tourney on January 16th on Badin. Obviously not to win, b/c I don't stand a chance against you "veterans", but to put a face with some names here and make some more fishing friends. I would probably be entering as a single person team, so if you wanna hop in my boat and fish you are welcome to!

Sorry for all the ?'s, just trying to pick ya'lls brains

-James

I am sure there are some guys on here that will step up and help you out. These questions don't seem unreasonable at all. Hell, If I lived close enough I would be glad to take you out on the lake and show you myself but, seeing how I live in Kentucky, I can't do you much good!!!

dropnbassonu,
you can catch them deep or shallow depending on what the weather is doing. The water is virtually the same temp. top to bottom right now ('cept maybe some super super deep water)and the oxygen is the same as well. I recommend you get out and fish the Tx, what you will learn is priceless (it the where... really, esp. everyones first drop , bring the binoculars). Check out Calusa's website, their video on throwing a net is dynamite. I relearned to throw a ten footer better and longer than I could one arming an eight footer and my body thanks me for it. Your welcome to come fish w/me sometime.

You got to get your throw net thing behind you. Practice, practice ,practice you need fresh bait (herring, shad) which is easy at badin most of the time. Jig for some perch instead of using bluegill . I don't even use bluegill except for flatty fishing in the summer. Some use crappie but I haven't much . Get after learning how to throw that net first . Then fish humps ,ledges and holes mid lake when the currents not the happening. if good current fish from the trussel up . Hope this helps .

Come and fish the tourney and hang around after the weigh in...we will show you how we throw the cast net..its loading and timing on the throw. I remember buying my first cast net...my dad said you not going to catch nothing with that dang thing. Now its throw right there or throw it right here....after loosing several castnets to his recommendation..... I bought him one for christmas...now I throw his wherever he wants me to throw it. Hes getting picky now on where to throw it. LOL Start small...maybe 6 fter and work up from there. Use your eclectronics to find bait first. As for fishing the tourney...you will not regret it..you got as good a chance as anybody on a two fish limit. It can happen in a split second. Your willness to learn and ask folks to fish with you will gain you more knowledge than you ever could learn in a year just fishing every other week by yourself. We all learn from each other. You see all these nice fish getting caught at badin and think these guys will smoke you in a tourney..not the case...prefish dont count at badin. Ive always said badin will make you or break you as fast as any lake on the yadkin chain. Livebaiter smoked em one night this week..fished hard since then...not one blue in the boat on the last two trips. I guarantee you I can call him right now and he will go right back. He nevers tells me no....lol. Trick is you got to find that big fish school when they feeding to catch big ones. Look at our last tourney at badin 12 lbs won it! Gearhead is right on current but you let that current slow a tick....it will look like Africa up above that trussel with all the zebras up there.

Man badin has skunked and had her way with all of us both new and veteran...I am a newbe and these guys have helped me out a lot. I teach school for a living and I tell my students that if u don't ask, u won't know. The worst that can happen is u know as much as u did before u asked. The more these guys get to know u the more they will help. I have fished the tournaments with a guy I met just a few months ago. I'm very appreciative of it. I was on badin thursday and called up catfishrus and told him where I was. I had never fished there but he had just fished the spot the day before. These guys will do all but take u to their secret holes which is only fair. Time on the water got them that. Come check out the tournament. Should be good. You might even get mike's bounty...lol

YES. it takes lots of practice.I practiced in my yard.over, and over I use a 7' I like a 10'.it got messed up a couple of trips ago. If you practice in the yard, what ever you do DON'T practice on the CAT.they will go wild and wife will get real mad, Really, once you see some different throwing styles.pick one that works for you and throw that thang.I love catching bait.and bait ranks pretty high on the pole when it comes to catching fish like them guys are catching.

What we are tryinh to say is everyone on here is here to help everyone.. Thats the whole idea of a forum...It gives you a report of someone elses work on the lake previously. I am far from the best fisherman on here...but ill do anything I can to help out a brother fisherman . drifting badin right now is where your gonna have better luck. Just find you a long ledge and drift it letting your fishfinder do the work....It will let you know quickly rather the fish are there or not and you can cover alot of ground. Good luck and message me anytime for a report or question. Im here to help all the that fish with rod and reels and wanna catch some pigs.

A good fishfinder is a must for blues, It will at least reassure that there are fish under the boat, But blues are much more spooky than an old flathead. You can pretty easily fish for flatheads by sight. Best thing to do is drop the trolling motor if you happen to run accross a good looking ledge or drop off, then let the fishfinder be your under water eyes. Blues are a schooling catfish, so usually where you find one youll find another. Reading a lake and learning the terrain of the bottom is a must. I have had good luck catching blues on cut gizzard shad, trolling blue back herring, Ive even cut a small dink blue up for bait one time when bait was tuff to find and caught a 33lb blue on cut blue catfish fillet. I also have good luck catching them on shad fillets. The guys catching the monsters generally prefer a monster gizzard shad head. Good luck in your quest. They are a fun fish to catch. If there is any thing else youd like to know please feel free to ask.
