Bream baiter wouldn't snelling the hook still leave the hook free moving? It's attached at the shank so in essence becomes part of the hook. Heck I don't know, this stuff is getting too complicated for me. I believe i'll go back to dynomite no tying hooks,no bent or broken hooks, no rod.... just light it and fish

Using a loop to attach the hook allows the hook to pivot around and move in any direction. Snelling keeps the hook shank in line with the leader which restricts action. Might not seem like a little more action would make much difference but it has for me. Especially when using live bait. I guess it's best to use what you have confidence in but also try different things. I snelled the same type of hook for a couple of years before trying the loop. Snelling is nowhere close to being as good as looping. I catch more fish and bigger fish now. Maybe Tomahawk will see this post and talk about his experience with loops.

I started of tying a palomar knot then I changed to snelling all of my gama oct/circles until I had a few malfunction. It wasn't just me that had them come lose it was two other people I fish with had it happen too so, I know it wasn't stupidity on my part. I also tried useing a split ring on the hooks and tying it to the leader with a palomar. That worked well letting the hook move freely but, thats just one more thing to fail. I am back to tying the hooks directly to the leader with a palomar knot and don't have a problem.
These are the split rings I used.... http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...&cm_ite=netcon

Best to depend on personal experience. Try half your leaders with snells and half with loops.

I did some reasearch a while back with the same results for a gamma octopus circle with the turn eye , snell them . I use a khale with a Trilene knot without any issues . Has anyone ever seen the knot wars on TV done with a computerized hydrolic scale .The Palomar and Trilene were a tie for the best with mono I believe .

Thanks for the info bream baiter..... I'll add one more of my experiences. Here lately i been using the gamma in-line circle. the hook point is not offset. It appears to me,so far that they are working better for me than the off set hook point. I have not experienced any fish coming loose yet. I did with the others.

I think hook up ratio is also dependant on the fish too. When they are on the feed, leaving the reel in gear w/the drag set right hooks up pretty good for me, because they really want it. When they are just playing with it, clickers and patience works better. Either way I set the hook atleast twice
. Finding out what they are doing that day and switching gets more fish to the boat for me. Cut baiting I primarily use Catmaxx 7/0-9/0 hooks (straight eye, off set point), pretied hooks are a uni-snell, retied hooks just a uni-knot sometimes (laziness) and I haven't seen a real big difference in missed fish w/either other than operator error.

Here is how I snell mine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBC678f85qg I learned to do it this way from reading this experiment.......pretty interesting if you haven't read it b4.... http://www.fishing.sh/htmfiles/knots/snelling.html So, question is, am I snelling it differently than you all? Because my problem when snelling like this is when I try to thread my hook around and through the bait, it seems to loosen up and sometimes come undone. Your thoughts? |

I had the same problem (snell coming loose) w/that snell in the video w/large diameter lines. 30# and under did fine and didn't come loose. I switched to the uni-snell and pull up the snell real hard on a rod holder (wetting the line of course) and haven't had the problem since with 40# + leaders.
