Cured Livers with Blood
Submitted by: TrapperEarl Items you will need: #1- 4 large cookie sheets (yard sale item, don't spend alot of money on them as you will not use them for anything else) #2- roll of aluminum foil #3- roll cheese cloth or window screen ( to keep flies and bugs off, again yard sale item) #4- large bottle of garlic salt (dollor store spices, nothing top shelf, the more salt the better) #5- three or four tubs chicken or turkey livers #5- grease from 1 pound of fried bacon (cheep store brand with lots of fat) #6- 1/2 cup lard or some type solid shorting for cooking (crisco works good too) prepairing the bait: start by covering the cookie sheets with the foil, shinny side up. drain livers and reserve the blood and juice place the livers on the cookie sheets and space them so as not to touch each other. sprinkle the garlic salt heavyly on the livers covering them well cover the cookie sheets with the screen or cheese cloth place outside in direct sunlight for 1/2 a day after 1/2 day in the sun remove covering and flip livers over and recover with garlic salt and recover with screen and let stand rest of the day after they "cure" remove them from the cookie sheets and place in disposable plactic tubs place in fridge till needed ( will keep for about two weeks) prepairing the blood: place the juice and blood from the livers in a glass bowl place a piece of cheese cloth over the bowl and put in fridge over night when chilled well, place the grease from 1pound of fried bacon in the bowl soften solid shorting by warming not melting and add to bowl mix well with spoon, do not use mixer or blender place in disposable container and put in fridge keep adding grease till the mix is about the same as soft butter and can be spread over livers usage: hooks and leader: a #1 or 1/0 trebbel hook with 6 to 12 inches of 30# test line with a simple loop knot on tag end. bait: slide leader through liver ( do not try to "hook" liver on hooks) slide liver down on shank of hook attach leader to main line smere blood mix on liver to make a blood trail from yor bait ( do not press too hard as you do not want to brake liver on hook) lob bait to you hole, this bait will cast the first time but after being in water the liver will soffen some and can be slung off on other casts. resmere blood mix after 20 min. or when rebaiting. works best in spring and fall for eaters, also works well in shallow flats right after the spawn.
