Default Blewett Falls 5/21

Fished blewett today. Water temp 45 lots of current, river up 1.5 feet above full. Took six to hold, up river. Fish bit all day. Had that problem that pops up once in a while staying hooked up but caught several blues. Big fish just shy of 30lbs. Beautiful day on the water. Got back to the landing , truck battery dead. Left lights on. Just happened to be a fellow sitting there in his car and he jumped me off..... Lucky me....... dang I mean 12/21 I musta went thru a time warp down there

Looks like the fish were biting pretty good up there too! Congrats on a fine day man! Now you need to get some pics

What kind of boat and anchor do you have?

No pics didn't take the camera. Boat is 16ft jon, 20lb river anchor works for me. have had it to slip before, that can get scary sometimes in heavy current, especially if you are anchored sideways...... If it's real heavy just anchor it from the nose.

Man, I don't think I'd like anchoring sideways in a whole lot a current! I imagine it is pretty scary if it slips some I'm sure you probably know this already but the old bucket off the back with the anchor in the front is a GREAT setup in heavy current. Helps keep ya straight even in decent wind. Can cause the anchor to come up but usually doesn't.

I have a 15lb river anchor and it holds great

Thanks guys.... going back tomorrow. CB79 I thought you might have had them fish sore mouhed. I did notice that the ones getting off would pick up the bait and go across current. I imagine that would cause the line to bow in the current and using the heavy weight make it tough on setting the hook. I was using khales, we just had this discussion a few weeks ago so I'm just gonna suck it up and quit whining. Tomorrow is another day

OK had another day with fish coming undone with Khales and circles. Went to a gamma octupus and problem solved. Today any way. fished blewett again, fish bit all day big fish at 16. I'm done with khales, why they ain't staying hooked up is beyond me but i'm tired of trying to figure it out. I'm going to the octupus or back to j's........ until they start unhooking themselves. OK fire off on me

What did you exspect?...You sore lipped them yesterday and thought they was going to hold on for you catch em again today? I cant blame that on the hook....lol. Preasure too high this morning for good hook setting. What size weights you running? Congrates on your catch.

I had five oz upriver went down in the lake and was using two and three ozs didn't help, so i ruled that theory out. when i changed hooks problem was solved. we lost probably 12-15 fish coming unhooked on the khales plus i kept one rigged anyways just to be sure, landed one fish only.... I'm stumped. actually i have one more theory that i need help on.... I noticed on one fish that was caught on a circle that the fish was hooked int the bottom lip bout midways. I'm thinking that might be the problem the hook ain't going to the corner of the mouth ,the gap ain't big enough and his hitting bone. Now what causes the hook to set in the bottom lip? I also ran a tight line and ran some with clickers same results.

Good luck to you Bill.

Circle hook..I dont know the answer to your question but I sure have shared in your frustrations on the matter....here lately. Although we havent had a big issue with it since that one day and Im still using kahles mainly. I do use the gamo octopus hooks for drifting 90% of the time in 5/0. Ive had issues with them at tillery anchor fishing..thats why I went to the kahles for anchoring. So its seems like we go in circles on whats working.

Good luck Bigcat, if you go to blewett the water is dropping. Went down a foot from the other day when i went. Fish are biting though....... CRUS, 10-4 in going in circles with the hooks. I never used the gamma octupus hooks too much. What issues did you have, when anchored? i'm thinking about opening the gap on the khale a little to see if that might help. Don't want to weaken the hook though. I wouldn't worry too much if the fish weren't hitting aggressively, but we were getting good solid hits and would have them on and then come un done. Same as you the other week. I would go strictly circle, but they don't work on lite biters...... too confusing, i think i'll take up golf.......NOT!

OK think about this. CB79 told me to go to a smaller hook. Didn't make sense to me but I went to the 5/0 and I only missed one fish. Actually was my partner done the catching yesterday. Anyhow I thought i needed a bigger hook but got to thinking about this thing a lot. Just about all the ones that came undone had the hook stuck back in the bait. I tried rigging the bait different ways but same result. My thinking now is actually my hook is to big for the bait and a smaller hook would less likely hook itself into the bait as long as you got enough hook. Make sense?..... Thanks CB79 I believe you are on to it!!!!!...... Think I'll drop down to a 5/0 Khale and try.

I think the fish are full... They are fat, They look like pop belly pigs... Just maybe they are laying on the bottom and they see this nice piece of cut shad laying in frount of them. They ease over to it, thinking dang that looks good but dang i'am full.. well maybe i'll just go over there and nibble on it..
And thats wene you get a lite bit!!!! LOL
